In the summer of 2013, the worst fire in the history of the Balearic Islands calcined 2,335 ha. from Mallorca, the fire was caused by a human error, a barbecue badly extinguished.
Photography, videos and glass cabinet, 2013-2019
The Ash installation is composed by the Random Ash video, made in 2013, a few weeks after the fire, in an area affected by the flames, and the GIF (Great Forest Fire) video, made in 2019, from footage on the fire facilitated by Xarxa Forestal of the Ministry of Environment of the Government of the Balearic Islands, and with current images of the burning territory.
The glass cabinets of 120 × 60 cm. , with green chroma background, include historical and current documentation of the burning area, photographs, maps and biological remains collected on the ground.
The video installation and the glass cabinets are part of the collective exhibition Archipel Ouest-Îles du futur, in the Frac Corse, Corti 16.01.2020 / 15.03.2020.
The process of loading a digital content is represented by a circular movement of some type of icon. An election, error, drift or organic navigation lead us to a new space or image. In the performative action of the video I'm drawing on the ground with my circular and repetitive path, moving the first layer of ash, the ground was still hot. The large forest fires are a cyclical constant in Mediterranean forests, which in 70% of cases recover slowly and gradually, and in which ash also serves as fertilizer. The 80% of fires in the Balearic Islands are caused voluntarily or by human imprudence.
